Julie,

From years of research and through trial and error, I’ve managed to piece together the best types of dietary supplements/protein/foods for optimum health, well-being and helping with fat burn. I’ve added links to Amazon with the best brands and prices.

1: L-Carnitine.

This is great for shredding fat! I’ve tried many brands including pill form and liquid. The best bang for your buck with cost, effectiveness, taste and quality is Pro Supps L-Carnitine 3000. (Go with the Berry flavor)

2. Forskolin: Forskolin is an active compound found in the roots of the Indian coleus (Coleus forskohlii), a tropical plant related to mint. This isn’t a miracle supplement that will melt all the fat away, but it does help when you’re in a caloric deficit. It’s also shown to help preserve muscle mass when you’re dieting. The recommended dose is 500mg a day.

3. 7-Keto DHEA: 7-Ketodehydroepiandrosterone, also known as 7-oxoprasterone, is produced by metabolism of the prohormone, DHEA. One randomized, placebo-controlled research study on dieting and exercising healthy overweight individuals found 7-keto-DHEA significantly increased body-weight loss and fat-loss. There haven’t been too many long term studies on this supplement, but it has yielded positive results. It’s been a part of my supplement regimen for a few years, and although it’s no magic bullet, it certainly helps. The recommended dose is 100mg, twice a day.

4. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a naturally occurring fatty acid, similar to an omega-6 fatty acid but with health benefits for skin and weight loss. It’s one of the “good fats,” present in foods such as beef and dairy products, but only in low levels. A recent study investigating the effect of 4.2 grams of CLA per day in 53 healthy individuals showed a significant decrease (3.8 percent) in body fat compared with individuals not taking CLA. Take 1500mg (2 soft gels a day) to keep the fat away!

5. Astaxanthin

A must have anti-oxidant! When compared to other antioxidants, Astaxanthin is very potent. Common antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin A, C, and E, possess far less antioxidant power than Astaxanthin, when applied to human physiology. (BioAstin) Astaxanthin possesses 550 times the antioxidant power of vitamin E; 6,000 times the power of vitamin C; and 800 times the power of the popular super-antioxidant, Co-enzyme Q10. When adding a supplemental health agent such as Astaxanthin to a daily diet and a routine exercise regimen, the health benefits can be enjoyed throughout the body. Astaxanthin can also cross the blood brain barrier. This is very beneficial for a healthy brain! I would highly recommend the Bioastin that has 12mg. It’s made from the big island of Hawaii and has been rated the best brand for these supplements.

6. BCAA’s

This is necessary for building muscle and recovery. Take as a pre-workout.

7. HMB

This is a derivative of the amino acid, L-Leucine and is great for muscle repair and growth

8. Vitamin D3

Most people don’t get enough Vitamin D from the sun, unless you’re on the beach for several hours a day. Having Vit D levels at optimum levels is vital for the production of other hormones. Take at least 5000iu a day.

9. Turmeric

A must have for inflammation, liver health, skin, heart and cancer fighting.

Foods

1. Protein Powder

I really like Muscle Pharm for its taste and quality. I’ve tried many brands throughout the years of bodybuilding. Take only before and after your training.

2. Brazil Nuts

Lots of selenium in these nuts that is great for health and regulating your thyroid.

3. Quest bars

Great tasting, high protein and low carbs for a meal replacement when you don’t have to prepare a meal.

4. Quest chips (sour cream)

High in protein and helps with the carb/chip cravings!

Quest cheddar

5. Quest cookies
